Listen To My New Album! Above The Sky

Above The Sky

$10.00

We worked "so carefully" in the studio to capture the sound of a live EHB performance. This one has the warmth and presence of what I do best.

Listen to my first album...

Mended Again

$7.50

My first album released in 2003, recorded, mixed, and mastered at Paul Orofino's Millbrook Sound Studios in Millbrook, NY, produced by Chris Cubeta. Frank Carillo plays Guitars, Keys, Harmonica, the Laud, and Sitar. Karl Allweir plays Bass, Norman Del Tufo plays Drums and Percussion. Chris plays Guitars and Keys and sang backup vocals. I'd never been in a recording studio before. This was where it all started. Rock and roll from my heart and spirit, though at the time of the recording sessions I really had no idea that this was the start of my life as a musician...so the journey began with this album.

Mended Again [2:52]  lyrics
This was the song Mick Jones of Foreigner heard in basic track format and then told me to keep going forward with the project. The guitar solo played against the sitar still gives me the chills.

Gear It Up [3:23]  lyrics
I wrote this rock song on a dare from Peter Walker back in 1983 that I couldn't write a song in 15 minutes...I won that bet. Norman counts this one off on the track and in live performances we always introduce the band on an extended intro. Its another one of my one-take vocals which was supposed to be a scratch track but turned out pretty good.

You Are With Me [3:26]  lyrics
I wrote this song in 1993 when Gustavo Brillembourg died climbing El Capitan. The song is dedicated to him. It was used for a wedding in the Netherlands in 2004 even though it is actually about loss..I guess the words have more meaning than I realized.

Not So Sure [3:20]  lyrics
Frank counts off this one and its another one take of the band with vocal overdubs done later. It was the first song I ever over dubbed. This is the first song to include some simple paraphrases from Buddha. "See the true as true and the false as false. Look into your heart and follow your nature."

Hand In Glove [3:01]  lyrics
I wrote this song from a riff on a Casio keyboard. Chris played the piano off the cuff, Norman put all the cool Calypso style percussion down. Its still a favorite early in the sets.

To The Steel [3:52]  lyrics
This was originally a slow blues song that may or may not tell a true story. Frank plays a killer slide lead on his 1956 Gretsch Duo Jet on this one, but when he heard the mixed track a few days later he asked Chris, "Who plays that slide lead?"

One So Strong [3:27]  lyrics
This song is dedicated to three women I know who all overcame difficult life situations and in the end turned out to be the strong ones rather than the weak ones. The verses are about them in turn.

Different When We Kiss [4:57]  lyrics
This is the biggest song on the album in my opinion. The double solo in the break shared by Frank and Chris is awesome. Its what theater folks call a "Show Stopper" at the gigs. The inspiration for this song came from a poem my father wrote about my mother.

Where The Words Begin [2:41]  lyrics
This one came to me on the balcony of the apartment at East 87th Street in the city. I really don't know where it came from, but it echoes a common theme in my songs of making use of the time we have with the ones we love...because before you know it, it's gone.

The End Justifies The Means [3:21]  lyrics
Frank kills on the harmonica solo on this one. Its just another one of my basic rock songs in the key of E...but there's a charm to that basic simplicity. The lyrics are some of the first to include literary references such as "curiosity kills the cat" which is a paraphrase of a Robert Frost poem...

My Friend Whiskey [4:05]  lyrics
This is a one-take live recording with all of us sitting around a room microphone. It is the most downloaded song off this album on iTunes, but contrary to the general myths surrounding the song it is NOT about any problem that I might have with Whiskey, but about a horse I had in my care when I was 17 named Whiskey Man after the song by the Who. At least that was the start of the song, and then I broadened it to include warnings about the dangers of friendships which become addictive and controlling.

Listen to my second album...

Head Over Heels

$7.50

I recorded and released Head Over Heels in 2005 at Foil Studios in Poughkeepsie with Chris Cubeta as producer again. Chris Rinaldi had become the lead guitarist in the band so he was the lead guitarist on the album, I played acoustic and electric guitar, Chris Cubeta put down the drum tracks, bass tracks, and keyboards/synthesizer tracks, Krista Libertino did backing vocals, Scott Tumblety plays the sax solo on the title track, and Ed Thorney plays the harmonica solo on Whenever We're Apart. We had a magical time recording this one. Once again the final track, Summer Mood, which is all acoustic with no percussion track, is the most downloaded song of this group.

Head Over Heels [3:43]  lyrics
I made this song up when my daughter Megan was about 2 years old. The line about the "the pretty sky is blue, blue, blue" came from her when she saw a huge sunburst of light coming through the white clouds against a blue sky in New Hampshire.

The Night's On Fire [4:00]  lyrics
This is just a straight up rock song that I love to play. Its finest moment was in August of 2007 when I decided to play it solo at our first gig on the Isle of Skye and while I was working my way into the song the guys in the band slowly joined me and by the end of the song we were a rock band and the rest of the night was awesome.

Whenever We're Apart [3:11]  lyrics
This is the one Ed Thorney plays the soulful harmonica solo on. The song is really about how it feels to be a parent when your kids have started going away to school or to other places.

Everything You Got [3:17]  lyrics
This song is dedicated to Albert Carey, one of my rock mentors who played lead guitar with me before Chris Rinaldi and also played bass on my first ever live gig when Mended Again was released. Bert once said that in order to do well in a performance you had "to give it everything you've got."

If I Could [2:19]  lyrics
This is a sweet little one take bluegrass style song that everyone loves. Me fingerpicking the basic part with Chris Rinaldi on a National Steel and Chris Cubeta on a Banjitar. This was the song I played at a friend's wedding which was "their song".

Knight In Armor [4:09]  lyrics
This is the oldest song I have, written around 1972. Its dedicated to my son Justin because he was in the Marines at the time of the recording and it was a tough time for all of us especially him. He joined me for my first tour ever in California and played bass and then went back to his base.

Heart In Your Hand [4:07]  lyrics
This song is about seeing Justin off at the Sacremento airport so he could return to his Marine base at the end of the tour in California. I was telling Chris Mayner, the DJ at KMUD in Redway, CA about the episode and he said, "And there you were with your heart in his hand."

The Silver Shepherd [3:25]  lyrics
This is another old one from the 70's that has a story attached to it in the Bio section about Jock Duncan the shepherd in Falkland, Fife, Scotland who told me the song was "the story of his life." It was originally about a friend named Richard Leavitt who owned the sheep farm in New Hampshire where I lived when my daughter Megan was born.

You Can Be [3:41]  lyrics
This is a flat out ZZ Top boogie style song with a message. You can read about the story behind it and Gavine Morton from Scotland in the Bio section. I love playing this song.

Summer Mood [6:20]  lyrics
This is a beautiful song written about the strawberry farm in New Hampshire owned by two friends of mine. Its a live recording with me on acoustic guitar finger picking in the middle, Chris Rinaldi out does himself on the Les Paul towards the end and Chris Cubeta holds down the middle on acoustic too. The hoe down at the end was awesome. Its the subject of a YouTube posting because some folks in Scotland wanted to know how i play it.

Second Sight

$7.50

Recorded and mixed at Tainted Blue Studios in New York in 20007 and released the same year, with Ron Thaler producing and doing drums, engineered by Ali Hassan, mastered by Scott Hull. I play electric and acoustic rhythm guitars, Oscar Rodriguez plays lead guitars and keys, Bob Kaus on bass. This album harkens back to Mended Again in terms of its rock vibe.

Molecules To The Light [4:30]  lyrics
Molecules is the first song on all of the albums co-written. Mike Colletti wrote the original music and the lyrics are based on a quote from Carlos Santana when he told Clive Davis that all he wanted to do "was connect the molecules to the light". And that was the beginning of "Supernatural". Deb Newallo and Nadine Thomas sing backing vocals.

Good To Bad [4:16]  lyrics
This is the first sad ballad I ever recorded. It is made up of true vignettes from the lives of people I know. It's the second co-write with Mike Colletti who wrote the music and I put the words to it. Barry Salmon plays the higher matching notes in the middle.

Hey Baby [3:51]  lyrics
I made this song up while walking from Falkland village in Scotland back to Newton of Lathrisk where we stay at the East/West Cottage. Some guys were using a pneumatic nail gun up on a roof and the rhythm got in my head and the words followed. Barry does his "glass cutting" solo in the first lead section and then Oscar goes off in the second lead section in a big way.

This song is based upon a simple realization that I had after my father's passing. The opening line is a John Starks quote which really puts the spotlight on the here and now. Deb Newallo sings backing vocals.
